The Ministry of Education through Malawi Institute of Education is planning on consulting the general public in its process to review school and college curricula for basic, secondary and primary teacher education. Stakeholder consultative meetings are one of the important activities in the curricula review process where views from the general public are considered into the curricula to make it responsive to the needs and aspirations of the Malawian society.
Director of Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Golden Msilimba made the remarks at the opening of a planning meeting which took place at Malawi Institute of Education in Domasi from 7th to 11th August, 2023 where he highlighted that the review of the school and college curricula for basic, secondary and primary teacher education which is underway aims at aligning the education offered to Malawian children to Malawi 2063’s fifth enabler of promoting Human Capital Development. “The curricula review need to include views from the public hence consultative meetings with various stakeholders”, he said.
Through the consultative meetings, the general public will be given a chance to express their views on what should be included in the curriculum. The public will participate in the consultations through different modes of communications including the social media.
The new curricula for basic, secondary and primary teacher education will be designed to also accommodate out of school youth, as the Ministry’s goal is to equip students and out of school youth with relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that can enable them become self-reliant and positively contribute to national development.
The Executive Director for MIE, Dr. Fritz Kadyoma echoed Dr. Msilimba’s sentiments and said that “curriculum review is always at the core of the quest for quality education as it enhance student learning outcomes. I, therefore, commend Government of Malawi for a continued support towards the activities”.
The revised curricula is expected to be ready for implementation by the year 2028.
