Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) proudly celebrates a decade of partnership with the African Library Project (ALP) and the successful handover of 2023 ALP books to 34 libraries across Malawi. This historic event, held at the Malawi Institute of Education Hall on September 14, 2023, marks MIE’s unwavering commitment to promoting literacy and numeracy skills among learners and students in Malawi.
Here’s a snapshot of our journey:
- The MIE-ALP Partnership: In 2013, MIE joined hands with ALP, a US-based nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing literacy and numeracy skills through book provision.
- Vision and Commitment: MIE envisions a Malawi where students receive a quality education aligned with national development goals. To achieve this, we prioritize literacy and numeracy skills and invest in vibrant school libraries.
Notable Achievements:
- Library Support: Since 2013, MIE has established and supported approximately 200 school and community libraries across Malawi.
- Monitoring and Support: In 2021, we conducted visits to ALP beneficiary libraries across all regions to assess impact and identify areas for improvement.
- Teacher-Librarian Training: In 2022, MIE provided comprehensive training to teacher-librarians in three regions, equipping them with vital library management skills.
- Expanding ALP Activities: In 2022, we introduced ALP activities in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts, aiming to extend the benefits of literacy programs to rural communities.
- ALP Model Libraries: In April 2023, MIE established its first ALP Model Library, Mlambe School Library in Mpombe Zone, Machinga district. This initiative allows trained teacher-librarians to gain practical experience and supports teaching and learning in local schools.
MIE’s dedication to education and literacy remains steadfast, ensuring that Malawi’s students have the resources they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.
