Malawi Institute of Education is initiating a review process of the primary teacher education curriculum. The review process has started with a concept paper development activity that is taking place this week. The primary teacher education curriculum will be reviewed alongside the national primary curriculum and the national secondary curriculum. The review process for these two curricula started sometime back.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the activity, the Executive Director for MIE, Dr Frank Mtemang’ombe observed that the current primary teacher education curriculum emphasizes more on pedagogical knowledge than content knowledge. Dr Mtemang’ombe also pointed out that the design of IN-IN OUT-OUT IN-IN needs to be looked into as well if we are to realize the best training for our teachers in a quest for quality education. Dr Mtemang’ombe therefore urged the Department of Curriculum Development to ensure that all issues inhibiting an effective primary teacher education curriculum are addressed accordingly and that the curriculum responds to the current reforms.
On her part, the Deputy Director for the Department of Quality Assurance Services (DQAS), Dr Liviness Mwale expressed indefatigable support from the Government towards the curricular reviews.
Ministry of Education through Malawi Institute of Education embarked on the process of curricular reviews for pre-primary, primary, secondary and primary teacher education with support from the government.
