Training services are offered by Teacher Development Unit (TDU). Teacher Development Unit (TDU) is one of the Units at Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) responsible for organising and coordinating training activities. It is headed by the Acting Training Coordinator with a team of three Training Officers, two Early Childhood Development Centre Caregivers, the Secretary, and an Office Assistant.
Functions of Teacher Development Unit
- Planning, designing, and implementing continuing professional development (CPD) programmes.
- Monitoring and evaluating continuing professional development programmes.
- Development of training manuals.
- Reviewing of training manuals.
- Supporting of Early Childhood Development (ECD) activities.
- Management of cross-cutting issues and emerging issues such as Human Rights and Education, Early Grade Learning (EGL), Gender and Education, and critical thinking (CT).
- Chairing Training Committee and Grounds and Building Committees.
Activities done so far by Teacher Development Unit
- Trained primary and secondary school teachers and primary school teacher educators in Critical Thinking pedagogies.
- Trained primary and secondary school teachers and primary school teacher educators in Critical Thinking pedagogies in subject specifics such as Language Literacy, Numeracy, Science, and Social studies.
- Trained headteachers, deputy headteachers, and section heads from schools within zones of Chimwala, Chimbende, Koche, and Nkope from Mangochi in Gender and Education related issues.
- Trained Primary Education Advisors (PEAs) from Mangochi on issues related to their duties and responsibilities.
- Trained headteachers, deputy headteachers, and section heads in leadership and management courses under Local Government and Accountability Performance Project (LGAP).
- Monitored and supported school leaders who were trained under LGAP.
- Training PEAs, School Inspectors, headteachers, deputy headteachers, and female section heads under the School Leadership Training Programme which is Component 4 of the Malawi Education Reform Project (MERP).
- Monitoring and supporting school leaders trained under School Leadership Programme.
- Trained TTC lecturers in Early Grade Learning (EGL).
- Organised Professional Staff Seminars (PSS) and Professional Staff Meetings (PSM).
- Training caregivers in Early Childhood Development (ECD).
- Trained primary school teachers in content.
- Reviewed the Gender Sourcebook and Training manual.
- Facilitated the development of training plans.
