A renewed commitment to preparing learners for life’s opportunities and challenges took centre stage today as education stakeholders gathered at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre for the commencement of a Syllabus Alignment with Scope and Sequence workshop.
The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), and UNESCO, brings together curriculum specialists and education experts to review and align the Health and Wellbeing syllabus for Grades 4 to 6. The exercise seeks to ensure that learners acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary for healthy living, informed decision-making, positive relationships, and responsible citizenship.
Speaking during the official opening ceremony, the Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Education, Madam Thokozile Banda, highlighted the importance of the initiative in advancing Malawi Vision 2063 and the National Education Sector Investment Plan, both of which emphasise the need for an inclusive and equitable quality education system.
She noted that the Health and Wellbeing subject plays a critical role in helping learners develop self-awareness, emotional resilience, healthy lifestyles, and practical life skills that contribute to their personal growth and national development.
“Through this curriculum, we are building a generation that is better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities,” said Madam Thokozile Banda.
Participants will review the Scope and Sequence framework and align syllabus content to ensure learners progressively develop competencies in mental health, healthy relationships, personal hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, decision-making, financial literacy, and environmental responsibility.
