Shaping Malawi 2063 Through Curriculum Reform: Curriculum Refinement Moves to Grades 5 and 6

Following the successful refinement of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) syllabuses for Grades 1 to 4, the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) in Domasi has embarked on another critical phase of curriculum reform: the refinement of the National Primary Curriculum syllabuses for Grades 5 and 6.

The exercise brings together curriculum specialists, practising teachers, University and College lecturers and the Directorate of Quality Assurance officers to review and strengthen the existing syllabuses, ensuring alignment with the Competency-Based Curriculum and responding to the knowledge, skills, values, and competencies learners need to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

However, this process is about more than revising curriculum documents as it provides an opportunity to reflect on a fundamental question: Are we equipping every learner with the competencies needed to become an active contributor to the Malawi we aspire to build?

Speaking during the opening of the exercise, the Guest of Honour, the Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Madam Thokozile Banda, emphasised the importance of keeping learners at the centre of the curriculum reform.

“Let us refine these syllabuses not simply for the sake of changing documents, but to ensure that our learners receive an education that is relevant to their lives. The Malawi we aspire to achieve in 2063 should be shaped in our classrooms today.”

This exercise strengthens learning progression and ensuring a coherent curriculum pathway from the early years through the upper primary education.

The vision of Malawi 2063 will not begin in 2063 but it is being shaped today through what learners are taught, how they are taught, and the competencies they develop in the classrooms across the country.
