MIE commences refresher training for officers

In an era of rapid technological advancement, evolving workforce demands and changing societal expectations, curriculum specialists must continually refresh their knowledge and skills to ensure education remains responsive, relevant and future-focused.

It is against this background that the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) has commenced a six-week refresher training programme for its curriculum specialists; reaffirming the institution’s commitment to professional excellence and evidence-informed curriculum development. The refresher training will engage a cadre of experienced facilitators from various institutions that will provide a platform for professional growth, knowledge sharing and reflection on emerging trends shaping education today.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, MIE Acting Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira, emphasized that curriculum development is a dynamic field that requires specialists to remain lifelong learners. He noted that while curriculum specialists are already experts in their respective fields, the rapidly changing educational landscape demands continuous updating of knowledge and skills to keep pace with new developments, research, technological innovations and evolving learner needs.

He observed that professional learning enables curriculum specialists to critically reflect on their practice, embrace innovation and make informed decisions that enhance the quality of educational programmes to produce curricula that remain relevant, inclusive and responsive to national aspirations and global developments.

The programme provides participants with an opportunity to refresh and consolidate their expertise, exchange experiences with colleagues and deepen their understanding of contemporary issues influencing curriculum development. The initiative also reinforces the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional renewal in maintaining high standards of curriculum quality.

As education systems around the world continue to evolve, institutions responsible for curriculum development must remain at the forefront of learning and innovation. By investing in the continuous professional growth of its specialists, MIE is strengthening its institutional capacity to design and review curricula that prepare learners for the demands and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.
