In the ongoing curriculum review journey, Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) this week has embarked on the drafting of syllabuses for Grades 5 and 6 for the National Primary Curriculum (NPC). The workshop has brought together officials from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, curriculum specialists, teacher educators and practicing teachers united in a shared commitment to enhancing learning outcomes for young learners.
Speaking at the official opening of the workshop, the Principal Secretary for administration in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ms. Thokozile Banda emphasized to the participants that the design process of the syllabuses will be guided by three core principles of relevance, integration and progression. While highlighting that, “This is more than a curriculum change, it is an investment in the future of our children and our nation. We are preparing them not just for exams but for life.”
Echoing the same vision, the Acting Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira, urged the participants to think not just as curriculum developers, but as architects of experience pointing out that the syllabuses being drafted must empower teachers while ensuring that the syllabuses are relevant, inclusive and competency-based and engaging. In his remarks, the Acting Executive Director expressed gratitude to the development teams for their commitment for noble course and the government of Malawi for continuously funding the curriculum review process.

Held under the theme, “Curriculum Change and Innovation- Towards Achieving an Inclusively Wealthy and Self-Reliant Nation”, MIE continues to lead the journey of curriculum review and strategically aligning it with Malawi’s Agenda 2063.
