Launch of the national mathematics curriculum reform in Lilongwe

On 22nd October 2024, the National Mathematics Curriculum Reform was officially launched at Yepa Primary School in Lilongwe. The milestone event was graced by the Secretary for Education, Associate Professor Mangani Chilala Katundu.

During the launch, teachers and learners captivated the audience with dynamic demonstrations, showcasing the practical skills and innovative approaches introduced by the new curriculum, affirming that “Mathematics is doable.”

Her Excellency Ms. Fiona Ritchie, British High Commissioner to Malawi, expressed her deep satisfaction with the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Education and the Malawi Institute of Education. She commended the dedication shown in crafting a curriculum that is set to transform mathematics education in Malawi.

The new curriculum, which began its roll-out in September 2024 for Standards 1 and 2, will continue its phased introduction in other grades starting in September 2025. This reform emphasizes hands-on learning and critical thinking, aiming to make mathematics more accessible and engaging for learners across the country.

Additionally, the curriculum is supported by user-friendly workbooks, which are available for purchase at the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) and through mobile sales vans at District Education Offices on scheduled dates.

This transformative step forward in mathematics education is a significant achievement for the nation, bringing Malawi closer to achieving its educational goals and empowering learners to excel in one of the most essential subjects.
