MIE Advances Teacher Education Curriculum Review with Refinement of Course Outlines

From 13 July 2026, the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) commenced an inhouse workshop to refine course outlines for the Primary Teacher Education Curriculum (PTEC) as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the quality and relevance of teacher education in Malawi.

The workshop is being held at MIE in Domasi from 13–16 July 2026. It brings together curriculum specialists to critically review, refine, and strengthen the draft course outlines that will guide the implementation of the new Diploma and Degree Primary Teacher Education programme.

The current workshop builds on progress made during the first phase of the curriculum review exercise, which successfully refined 34 course outlines. During this second phase, participants are reviewing an additional 19 course outlines, bringing the total number of course outlines to be finalized to 53.

Speaking during the opening session, Acting Executive Director Mr. Jennings Kayira emphasized the importance of the initiative in enhancing the specificity, quality, coherence, and consistency of the Teacher Education Curriculum. He noted that these improvements are critical for improving learner outcomes and aligning education with Malawi’s national development aspirations.

Mr. Kayira further encouraged participants to embrace teamwork and collaboration throughout the review process, stressing that collective expertise is essential for developing a curriculum that responds effectively to the country’s evolving educational needs.

The workshop marks another significant milestone in MIE’s ongoing mission to advance education through curriculum development and continuous improvement. Once finalized, the 53 course outlines will contribute to the preparation of competent and well-equipped primary school teachers capable of delivering quality education across Malawi.
