Representatives from the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) on Saturday, 1 March, 2025 participated in tree planting event organised by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB). The event, which took place on the beautiful mountain of Zomba, Mlunguzi Dam, was honored by the presence of the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Hon. Abida Sidiki Mia M.P, who led by example by planting a tree herself, inspiring many others to join in this essential cause.

At MIE, we deeply care about the welfare of our environment, especially the crucial ecosystems surrounding the Mlunguzi Dam. This dam, which has been a vital water source for Zomba City since its opening in 2001, has seen concerning drops in water levels, especially at the end of last year. By participating in this event, we reaffirm our commitment to restoring and maintaining Zomba’s natural beauty and ensuring that the Mlunguzi Dam remains a reliable water source for all.

Tree planting and the conservation of our water resources are not just a one-time event for us at MIE; they are integral components of our curriculum development process. We believe it is vital that we instill a culture of environmental stewardship in the hearts of our children. As we review our curriculum, rest assured that promoting environmental consciousness will continue to be prioritised.

During the event, Mr. Macdonald Lisimba, representing our Executive Director, Dr. Frank Mtemangombe, expressed our keen interest in sustaining and preserving our environment. He emphasised that MIE will persist in incorporating environmental conservation components into our curriculum activities.

Together, let us make Zomba green again. Every tree planted is a step towards a sustainable future for our children and our community.
