Mie Lobbies Government for Additional Funding to Complete National Curriculum Review

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) held a high-level engagement meeting with the newly appointed Parliamentary Committee on Education with the primary objective of lobbying Government for additional financial support to complete the ongoing national curriculum review process. The meeting was initiated by MIE to provide a platform for plenary discussions and aimed at equipping the Committee with comprehensive technical and policy insights necessary to support increased budgetary allocation.

During the engagement, MIE management presented the Institute’s mandate and outlined the structured framework guiding the curriculum review. The team highlighted significant progress made so far, including the drafting of some syllabuses for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher education levels. However, MIE emphasized that although initial funding was released, the amount remains insufficient to sustain and fully complete the review process as planned.

Speaking during the meeting, the Acting Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira,  appealed to the committee for continued advocacy and support towards enhanced funding. He reaffirmed Management’s commitment to delivering a responsive and high-quality curriculum aligned with Malawi’s development aspirations, while ensuring efficient and prudent use of public resources.

Echoing the same sentiments, the Chairperson for the Board of Directors of MIE, Prof. Emmanuel Kaunda, commended the committee for the engagement, noting that education is a shared national responsibility. He emphasised, the collective vision of fostering holistic learner development, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical while nurturing creativity, critical thinking, innovation, ethical responsibility, and digital literacy at all levels of education.

In her remarks, Mutani Tambala, the Chairperson for the Parliamentary Committee on Education said this engagement provided members with a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the Institute and strengthened collaboration towards achieving quality education, which remains a cornerstone of national development.
