Strengthening Gender Equality in Education

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) joined key education stakeholders in Machinga from 18–20 March for the successful refinement of the Gender Transformative Education Resource Book. The exercise was conducted under Plan Malawi’s Girls Get Equal (Get Equal 2) project and implemented locally by the Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM).

The workshop brought together representatives from CRECCOM, Plan Malawi, the Ministry of Education’s Directorate of Quality Assurance, and MIE. The team convened on 18 March to review and enhance the resource book using insights collected during a successful pilot phase.

Designed to equip teachers in both primary and secondary schools, the Gender Transformative Education Resource Book provides practical strategies for promoting gender-responsive and inclusive learning environments. It seeks to challenge harmful gender norms, support equitable participation, and improve learning outcomes for all learners especially girls.

The ongoing refinement is guided by feedback from a pilot conducted in Mulanje by Coordinating Primary Education Advisors (CPEAs) and Assistant Coordinators. Their classroom and school-level insights helped strengthen the resource book’s clarity, relevance, and applicability.

The workshop was officially opened on 18 March by the Deputy Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. John Mswayo. In his remarks, he emphasized the Ministry’s confidence in the team and highlighted the need for clarity and consistency in the updated material.

He stated: “We should use language that is appropriate and accessible, ensure that illustrations effectively support the content, and make this a significant step toward reducing gender disparities. It is important to maintain consistency throughout the material and avoid contradictions with the realities of our society.”

The final version of the Gender Transformative Education Resource Book is expected by 26 March. Once completed, it will undergo Ministry approval before being rolled out nationwide to support teachers in delivering equitable and transformative education.
